Are you a flu magnet? Thousands of people die from flu each year but health professional Erik Johnson of Healthy Living Solutions offers this countdown of 5 ways to fight the flu this winter.
5. Avoid crowds - shop early, limit exposure at holiday parties, try not to spend much time in medical waiting rooms. Keep your distance, especially from people who are coughing or sneezing.
4. Live healthy - Yes, it's hard during the holidays but a good diet is a great flu fighter. Aim for a little less sugar and a few more fruits and veggies and remember to drink plenty of water - alcoholic drinks don't count. Plenty of rest keeps your system strong so it can defend itself against the flu virus. Get a little more exercise. And a good laugh now and then couldn't hurt.
3. Take your supplements - Lots of evidence suggests that vitamin c and zinc stimulate the immune system. Garlic - either fresh or in capsule form - also helps with the immune system. Herbal supplements like
Quik Defense cold and flu fighter and Echinacea may help to prevent or lessen the symptoms of flu.
2. Wash. Scrub up thoroughly before handling food or utensils, before eating, after using the bathroom or changing the baby. Wash long enough to sing happy birthday to yourself through twice. (Bet you can't do that without smiling - and smiling is good for the immune system too.)
1. Get your shots - flu shots are essential for children and the elderly and a good idea for most other people too. No shortage of vaccine this year, so call your health provider or the government public health office for locations of upcoming clinics.
