This grass-like herb was originally found in South India. It subsequently spread to Europe, Asia and North America. It has tuberous roots or rhizomes that are fragrant that taste bitter.

Traditional Medicinal Uses:

Although it is considered one of the world's worst weeds, it is widely used medicinally in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and India medicine for its analgesic and antibacterial effects. It has also been used in TCM to regulate menstruation, and alleviate pain.*

Cyperus is a perennial with grass-like leaves, triangular stems, and rhizomes with small tubers attached. It has an acrid, slightly bitter taste. It promotes the flow of Qi in the body and in TCM is considered "the commander in chief" of Qi disorders.1*
