Anemia is sometimes called "tired blood" - and you will indeed feel tired if you are very anemic.
There are many forms of anemia, but in each case the problem is that the body is not producing enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the tissues.
According to the Mayo Clinic, anemia is a common blood disorder often striking women and people with chronic diseases. Anemia can range from mild to severe and be temporary or long lasting.
Anemia can be a sign of seious illnesses. Treatments range from dietary changes to taking supplements to undergoing medical treatments.
Certain factors may place you at increased risk of developing anemia:
- Diet. Iron, protein and vitamins are required to produce sufficient numbers of red blood cells. If you are not getting enough iron and vitamins, especially folate, you may be at risk of anemia.
- Menstruation. Blood loss during menstruation increases women's risk of developing anemia.
- Intestinal disorders. Any disorder- like Crohn's disease or celiac disease- that interrupts the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine may lead to risk of anemia.
- Chronic conditions. Cancer, blood diseases, autoimmune disorders, kidney or liver failure, diabetes or other chronic conditions, including ulcers, can put you at increased risk of anemia.
- Pregnancy
- Family history. A family history of anemia may indicate an increased risk of anemia.
- Lifestyle. Exposure to toxic chemicals, alcholism, a strict vegetarian diet, and the use of some medications can lead to anemia.
